MODULE EED2601
ASSIGNMENT 2
UNIQUE NUMBER 308798
DATE 31/07/2021
, QUESTION 1
1.1 Discuss why the definition is considered to have a behavioural
emphasis
Behaviourism, also known as positivism, believes that concepts should be
derived from observation evidence. We are able to formulate laws based on
the behaviour of people we observe and this allows us to predict and control
human behaviour, this is the ultimate gaol. The aim of the teacher within this
paradigm is “[…] to help students become environmentally knowledgeable,
skilled, dedicated citizens who are willing to work, individually and collectively,
towards achieving and maintaining a dynamic equilibrium, between the quality
of life and the quality of the environment” (Engleson, 1991:5).
The objectives of the behaviour approach are:
Raining awareness of the environment and the problems it faces.
Having sound knowledge about how the environment functions.
To develop a positive attitude towards the environment.
Participation in positive action regarding the environment
Development of the necessary skills to identify, investigate and to
contribute to the solution of the environmental problems.
1.2 Identify two Tbilisi Principles that relate to this definition and explain
how they can be used to promote behavioural change
1. “Relate environmental sensitivity, knowledge, problem-solving skills, and
values clarification to every age, but with special emphasis on
environmental sensitivity to the learner’s own community in early years”
Instil environmental awareness at the early years of the learners,
Provide them with environmental information,
Assist in developing good problem solving skills and values,
Help them to develop good environmental attitudes,
Teach learners to start small, i.e. start with change in their own
communities
2. “Promote the values and necessity of local, national and international
cooperation in the prevention and solution of the environmental problems”
Everyone needs to take responsibility for their own actions that
can affect their surrounding environment, either positively or
negatively,
Teach learners to behave in a responsible and respectful
manner,
Learners must be taught that everything given to us as humans
is valuable,
Teach learners to live sustainably,
