QUESTION 1

1.1 Discuss the writing process

, According to Graham Stanley, the process approach treats all writing as a
creative act which requires time and positive feedback to be done well. In
process writing, the teacher moves away from being someone who sets
students a writing topic and receives the finished product for correction
without any intervention in the writing process itself.
Nunan (1991) clearly states that the process approach focuses on the steps
involved in creating a piece of work and the process writing allows for the fact
that no text can be perfect, but that a writer will get closer to perfection by
producing, reflecting on, discussing and reworking successive drafts of a
text.

It is important for learners to understand that the purpose of writing is not to
finish the task as quickly as possible, but to get a result out of their
composition or achieve a goal.
Some of the results we want to achieve with writing are:
 Influencing people to look at a matter from a different
perspective
 Convincing someone of a particular matter
 Encouraging someone to do something
 Complaining, requesting, expressing feelings including giving
instructions or explaining something.
 It can also be to convince someone or asking for information
 Entertaining someone or remembering something
 It also includes learning spelling and punctuation or
practising something.

During the orientation process, the learner must first and foremost know or
identify the target group for which they are writing, the purpose of the text, i.e.
what does the learners want to achieve with the text.
The target group and the goal in turn will then determine if the writing task is
formal or informal and also determine the conditions with which the language
use must comply.
An example of informal writing is a short letter to confirm an appointment. For
such a task, there is no need to meet any strict conditions.
On the other hand, when writing an advertisement, there are certain
requirements. Word choice is important, spelling and grammar must be
correct and the type of language must be persuasive or convincing.
When the task or goal is to share feelings, the writing and language must be
creative and emotive.

Written text does not have the same target group. A text about trees for pre-
school for example, will totally differ from the text about trees for a biologist.
