600-700 word Essay on Using Authentic Materials and the Internet
Please write the essay under the four headings given.
a) The value of using authentic materials in foreign language teaching:
Authentic materials plays an important role in foreign language language due to learners getting
used to how the language is used in our daily lives, such as newspapers articles and online articles
on websites. Students need to use authentic materials sometimes to come across how it is used in
real-life situations. It provides genuine experiences so that learners can use and improve
communication skills and their cultural knowledge. Course books introduce students to more
hypothetical scenarios than realistic scenarios. The authentic materials can refer to audio an visual
materials such as podcasts, videos, etc and reading materials such as magazines and books. The
material provides learners with a variety of new words to learn and they can also listen to. It is
helpful for the lessons to not be monotonous and it keeps learners attention.
b) Reasons for the selection of this text and the 12 vocabulary items. Rationale for changes to
text, if applicable.
I removed some information from the text due to it being too long and the extra information not
being as relevant. I kept the main points of the text. The text is suitable for my learners due to all
of them being adults and using social media. It is educational and informative on the advantages
and disadvantages of social media on mental health. They learn that too much social media and
the internet can have a negative impact on people’s mental health and their own as well. The
vocabulary to teach is essential to the text. Learners will need the meaning of the words to
understand the context it is used in. Before activity B and C are answered, the vocabulary needs to
be understood.
c) Why my activities are appropriate for this class:
The dictionary race is the activity I have chosen to start off the lesson. Learners will be given the
vocabulary at the beginning of the lesson and have to use dictionaries to find the meanings. This
will stimulate communication between learners and fluency when speaking. The activity is fun and
meant to be student centered. My second activity involves learners to do further research on the
topic negative effects of social media on mental health. It is to see how learners can use online
resources and whether they are able to sift out important points from the notes. They are required
to write an essay using the information they have found. They will write an introduction, body and
conclusion of 300-350 words. In the essay, they also need solutions so that social media does not
negatively affect our mental health. In the third activity, They will use information from the essay
