Unit 12 : Supporting Individuals with Additional Needs

Learning Aim C: Investigate current practice with respect to provision for
individual with additional needs

Rebecca Brown is a 8 year old child who is a wheelchair user due to a fractured
cervical spine caused by a traffic accident when she was five enabling limited
movement. Rebecca attends a school for individuals with additional needs,
where she has a designated teaching assistance and also a carer who provides
her with personal care during the school day. One of Rebecca’s adaptations
would be her wheelchair as she would not be able to travel without it. The
wheelchair gives Rebecca easy access to places and public buildings; this helps
Rebecca overcome traveling challenges. Without a wheelchair Rebecca would
not have been able to travel which would have negatively impacted her life.
She would not have been able to attend her schools, visit her doctors
appointments or travel to places for entertainment. If Rebecca was unable to
attend school then she would not get the education she would have received;
getting an education would benefit Rebecca as she would feel confident and
secure her future. Visiting her doctors appointments would also benefit her as
she would treat her condition which would improve her condition therefore
improving her wellbeing and mental state. Furthermore, without the
wheelchair she would not have been able to travel to entertaining places,
without this she wouldn’t be able to make friendship groups and may feel
isolated resulting in depression and anxiety affecting her wellbeing. Moving on,
another Rebecca’s adaptation is to have the opportunity to study in a
specialised school where she receives extra help from her teaching assistance.
As Rebecca meets with a car accident her intellectual ability may have been
lowered, therefore receiving additional help would improve her understanding
and learning ability making her feel better and improving her welling; she
would also feel a sense of support which would improve her confidence and
self-esteem.

Ben Grace is fifty two and has Down Syndrome and type 2 diabetes. Due to
Ben’s condition she has a learning age of 8 year old and therefore requires
support with all aspects of daily living. Ben lives in a group setting after the
death of the main carer giver, his mother. One of Ben’s main adaptations
would be living in a group setting with other adults with learning disabilities
and who also require additional support. Living in this setting would benefit
Ben as she will receive all the additional support he requires to overcome his
daily challenge; this would help improve Ben’s mental health as he will have
the additional support and feel loved after the death of his loved once.
Another adaptation for Ben would be receiving educational help. As Ben has an
8 year old child’s ability of learning he would need extra help in understanding
