Basic Computer Skills for Beginners
Part 1
Short overview
We are going to look at the different kinds of computers, the
components of a computer as well as the factors that have an
impact on the performance of a computer
The components of ICT
The term ICT (Information and Communication Technology)
refers to all aspects of processing, managing and sharing
information. Without a computer it isn’t possible to collect,
process, manage and share such large amounts of information.
The e-mail facility enables you to communicate worldwide.
Other office equipment such as fax machines are still in use,
but the computer can also be used to send faxes through a
modem.
What is a computer?
A computer is an electronic device which is capable of
processing information to produce a desired result. It is
composed of hardware (that you can see) and software
(programs). Computers can exist in a variety of sizes and
configurations.
The computer:
Accepts information in digital or similar form from an input
device (e.g. keyboard, scanner, etc.) or retrieves it from a
storage device (e.g. hard drive, CD, floppy disk, etc.)
Manipulates and processes the data by carrying out a
sequence of instructions by using a program. Calculations
are normally arithmetic (addition, subtraction,
multiplication and division) and logic (compare data
entries with each other and sort in a specific sequence).
