Briefly discuss the role the South African Reserve Bank (SARB) fulfils in the South African payment system. (10 marks)
Answer: The Reserve bank is the central bank of South Africa and Central banks are generally conceived as autonomous institutions that have exclusive jurisdiction over the affairs within their competence and operate at the apex of the monetary and banking structure of a country. Under section 224 a, Its primary objective is to protect the value of the currency of the Republic in the interest of balanced and sustainable economic growth in the republic.
