When do you use the passive?
1. to change the focus of a sentence from who does something to what happens to something
vb. my assistant has prepared the contract. -> the contract has been prepared
2. to describe processes or how something is done.
vb. when the grapes have been picked, they are taken to the factory.
3. When the person who does teh action is unimpmortant, unknown or we want to avoid saying who it is
vb. My secretary has lost the order form -> the order form has been lost
!!!! Use 'by' after the passive verb to say who does the action !!!!
vb. The decision has been made by the CEO
4. To talk about reputation and with phrases like 'is said to be, is believed to be'
-> these are used in news reports and make the information more impersonal.
vb. California is said to be warm and sunny
vb. The Prime Minister is believed to be in talks with …
