, Question 1
1.) Changes that took place in South Africa’s history of curriculum include the higher education
enrollment has increased since the apartheid system. In the era prior to 1994 Black and
White learners had to attend separate schools and had different policies regarding medium
instruction. After the end of apartheid learners of color are together and attend the same
school with the same policies. There was a resistance to language policy regarding black
education culminated in the 1976 uprising. Therefore, this led to removing both Afrikaans
and black home language as the language of instruction in black schools. After the uprising
there was a decrease of bilingualism in black schools. After 1994 the official and educational
status were granted to 11 languages. There has been an increase in enrolment numbers and
levels. In the apartheid era white schooling was free, compulsory and expanding whereas
the black schooling was underfunded and had urban reflux to insufficient schooling funds.
There were little to no facilities for black schools, whereas now all school shave facilities
available for all students and all students may access these facilities. Black schools had very
little teachers as compared learners during the apartheid period whereas after the apartheid
period there was enough teachers for every school, as education had to be equally treated,
and learners had to be in classes as much as the teacher can handle. During the apartheid
times black learners did not have access to recreational activities and certain facilities and
could not share facilities with other races. Whereas after the apartheid era all learners were
given equal opportunity and had access to all facilities without being judged or discriminated
against. education was aimed at training the children for the manual labour and menial jobs
that the government deemed suitable for those of their race during the apartheid era. The
old curriculum the education is for knowing and in the new curriculum it is for
understanding. In the old curriculum the teacher was considered the information provider
whereas in the new curriculum the teacher is the facilitator. In the old curriculum there was
only one way communication and little to no feedback whereas in the new curriculum there
is not only one solution, students’ ideas and suggestions are respected. The old curriculum
was exam driven whereas in the new curriculum is it continuing evaluation. The only
curriculum emphasize d on achievements whereas in the new curriculum there is emphasis
on the outcomes, on what the learner knows and understands. The old curriculum was
factual approach whereas the new curriculum is skills and concept-based approach. The old
curriculum was content based, prescriptive, and rigid and centrally designed, whereas the
new curriculum is outcome based, devolution of design and flexible.
