Advanced Research Methods – Block II Quantitative part
Lecture 1: 03-11-2020
Paul Ligthart & Vera Blazevic
Companies collect data: structured, loosely coupled, randomly.
Data is not equal to information
Three steps towards ARM proficiency
1. Technique video clips, book chapters and consultation class
Focus on the statistical technique itself and your questions (be prepared,
visit the discussion forum)
2. Assignment/tutorial
Focus on the actual statistical analyses of real-life data and its research
report
3. Application lecture
Focus on applications, discussion of applying the technique (assignment)
and an add-on.
Work forms:
- Lectures
- Tutorials
- Application lectures
Examination: written exam on lectures and literature (Selected chapter Hair;
multiple choice + open questions) Assignments worked on and handed in
Open questions: Data output which you have to write something about
Assignments
There are two assignments
The assignments are to be done in groups of 3 students
During the SPSS-tutorials, you can do the SPSS part of the assignment
The additional readings are only needed for the assignments, not for the exam.
Deadlines: 23-
11 and 14-12
, A hypothesis usually consists of two parts:
A condition
A consequence
Each of the parts contains a construct
The independent variable (condition)
The dependent variable (consequence)
A construct is a conceptual term used to describe a phenomenon of theoretical
interest, it is quantifiable and directly or indirectly observable. An indirectly
observable construct is called ‘latent’.
Example: IQ
Constructs must be defined in terms of object, attribute and rater entity.
Endogenous variable is
dependent variable.
Exogenous variable is
independent variable.
