Assignment 3

, a) To best answer this question, we need to first define online teaching and traditional
learning. Online learning is any form of learning conducted partly or wholly over the
internet. Students take courses online instead of in a physical classroom. Online
students learn at their own pace and in their own time. Traditional learning involves
a teacher, a brick-and-mortar facility, and a group of pupils who gather together at
this facility during specific periods of the day to learn from the teacher/s. This may
include paper-based assignments and exams.

There are many pros and cons to each form of teaching. We need to look at our
country as a whole and make an informed decision. We need to ask, is our country
ready for online teaching? Is there enough infrastructure? Do all pupils have the
capacity for online teaching? Where will the internet connection and equipment
come from?

In the time that we are in people are craving human contact, pupils enjoy going to
school. From my personal experience, I have done online teaching and traditional
teaching, as well as a blended approach. When teaching online students are
unmotivated and seldom make contact with the teacher. When teaching
traditionally there is an opportunity to form relationships, offer real time assistance,
offer guidance and empathy. Students are far more eager to learn, see their friends
and be in the school environment. The blended approach puts strain on the teacher.
One loses track of where students are and whether they are keeping up with the
curriculum.

I feel that traditional learning is best.
Students are all given the same right to attend school. There is no question of
equipment, internet access or capacity.
Making connections and ensuring that the students are holistically cared for is much
easier for the teacher.
Students need the social connection from their peers in order to develop social skills
and connections.
Students can better understand concepts when taught face to face. Teachers are
readily available to explain and answer questions where necessary.
Just as students may not have the correct equipment/internet connection, the same
goes for teachers and schools that fall in a lower quintile.
Students are able to follow a regular schedule, this develops their discipline.
Partaking in physical activity at school improves fitness and mental alertness.

b) Traditional learning is best suited for younger learners as they are very social beings.
The social aspect of connecting with peers and adults other than their parents is
imperative for their development. With language development it is important that
learners be immersed in a print and language rich environment where they are
exposed to the correct grammar, spelling and pronunciation.
The technology for online teaching may be far beyond the capabilities of the young
learner, where adult assistance may be needed.
