, The Pleura
A pleura is a serous membrane that folds back on itself to form a two-
layered membranous pleural sac.
There are 2 types: visceral (inner)and parietal (outer)pleura.
1) The visceral pleura is thinner and wraps directly over the lungs.
2) The parietal pleura is thicker and lines the inside of the thoracic
cavity and mediastinum.
The pleural sac is the potential space between the two membranes
which is filled with fluid produced by the pleural layers themselves.
Function
The function of the pleura is to allow optimal expansion and
contraction of the lungs during breathing.
The pleural fluid acts as a lubricant, allowing the parietal and visceral
pleura to glide over each other friction free.
