, 1. Introduction
When one takes a closer look at world hunger and malnutrition one is
overwhelmed by the sheer magnitude of the problem.
For most of us hunger is a temporary state being followed by the relief of a full
stomach. Yet for millions of people hunger is a permanent state often followed
by malnutrition or death.
The effects of hunger and malnutrition are exacerbated by the fact that people
often have no control over their own circumstances and feel powerless to find
solutions.
I would therefore like to discuss how hunger and malnutrition influence the
health and development of communities and how community participation and
national political commitment can help to address the effects thereof.
