1.1 Curriculum

Although the curriculum does not have a specific definition, we can view the curriculum as all the
different aspects and concepts that should be teach in every grade. It is important for teachers to
understand and have knowledge of the specific subject’s, aspects, and concepts they teach in
order to provide successful education.



1.2 Reflective teaching

Reflective teaching refers to the planning, the presentation and the support teachers provide for
learners. In order words, the communication style, the level of content explanation and
facilitation the teacher provide on the most appropriate developmentally level of the specific
grade.



1.3 Multi-grade classes

Multi-grade classes refer to a classroom where there is one teacher, learners of mixed ages,
abilities and in different grades at the same time.


1.4 Africanisation
Africanisation is a process where the African culture and identity are taught and interpret in the
classroom. It includes adoption and promoting of the African culture.


1.5 Learning environment
The learning environment includes the teaching and learning of physical, affective, cognitive,
behavioural, and supporting environment.

Learner members and office bearers’ terms of office may not exceed one year and a school’s
governing body member’s term may not exceed three years. Office bearers may also be
reelected once that the one-year term has expired.



2.3 Roles and functions of SGBs in terms of the South African Schools

According to the South African Schools Act 84 of 1994, the school governing body must make
decisions regarding the following.

- The language policy of the school
