1.1) Discuss why the above definition is considered to have a behavioural emphasis.
One of the aims of Environmental Education is to persuade people to behave or act in pro-
environmental ways and desired environmental behaviour is a function of environmental
responsibility that results from interaction among different factors. People have the ability
to comprehend as well as to know exactly how to act and behave towards the environment
in which they live and depend on, and will still live and depend on in future.
In addition to learning knowledge, people need to:
Gain environmental literacy
Practice environmental ethics
Familiarise themselves with environmental cultural concepts and values
Change their attitude and value to the environment
Participate in protecting their own environment
Become a committed and responsible citizen
Follow a lifestyle compatible with the environment
Be able to make the correct decisions for solving environment problems and preventing
new problems to happen
Be sensitive to different events and decisions that affect the environment
Acquire the power to realize and analyse environmental issues and innovating new
methods to solve its problems.
Environmental education provides important opportunities to become engaged in real world
issues in order to see the relevance to the complex environmental issues, in order acquire
the skills we will need to be creative problem solvers. By teaching people how to think, not
what to think about complex environmental issues, we are helping people learn the
problem-solving skills they need to make informed choices about the environment as well as
to prepare for increasingly complex environmental issues.
1.2) Identify two (2) Tbilisi Principles that relate to this definition and explain how they
can be used to promote behaviour change.
Enable learners to have a role in planning their learning experience and provide an
opportunity for making decisions and accepting their consequences.
When learners are given the opportunity to make their own decisions and be responsible for
it, they will understand the consequences better. This principle focusses on helping learners
understand how their decisions and actions affect the environment, builds knowledge and
skills necessary to address complex environmental issues, as well as ways we can take action
to keep our environment healthy and sustainable for the future.
We cannot think about the future of our environment without thinking about the future of
the human race. A learner who believes that they can make a difference in their world will
feel confident enough to take on environmental projects. When children take part in the
planning of learning experiences, you have an opportunity to discover what they are
interested in and help them discover their potential to make a difference in the environment
and enjoy it! If we allow the learners to make decisions and learn from their own mistakes
and successes, we foster a learning attitude in them, we also provide a platform for them to
think critically and solve a problem. Environmental Education is a tool that helps people to
develop those skills and attitudes that are necessary to understand the importance of taking
care of their environment.
