INTRODUCTION
Organisational development (OD) refers to a planned and systematic approach to
improving organisational effectiveness and employee well-being by addressing
organisational processes, structures and interpersonal relationships. The general model
of planned change provides a useful framework for understanding how OD interventions
are implemented. It involves four broad stages: entering and contracting, diagnosing the
organisation, planning and implementing change, and evaluating and institutionalising the
changes. Although these stages provide a logical sequence, the process is not
necessarily linear, as findings emerging at one stage may require the organisation to
revisit earlier activities.
The Ikhaya Health Supplies case reflects a relatively systematic approach to planned
organisational change. The organisation initially identified a number of challenges and
subsequently appointed an external OD consultant to assist with addressing these issues.
The intervention then progressed through the stages of contracting, organisational
diagnosis, intervention and evaluation. Nevertheless, the case also raises several ethical
and contracting issues that need to be considered in OD practice. These include the
extent of employee involvement, maintaining confidentiality, balancing the interests of
different stakeholders and determining how organisational information should be
collected, managed and communicated.
Question 1: The Four Activities in the General Model of Planned Change
The general model of planned change outlines four interrelated activities: entering and
contracting, diagnosing organisational issues, planning and implementing interventions,
and evaluating and institutionalising change (Cummings, Worley & Donovan, 2020).
Although these activities provide a structured framework for organisational development
(OD), they do not necessarily occur in a rigid sequence, as effective change processes
require ongoing feedback, learning and adaptation.
