✓ NB: Look at the model provided and make sure you understand what MFP refer to here. See Units 2 and 7. For example, in number 4 in the
table below, we do NOT mean 'What is the function of the lesson'!!!
1. What is the target form of the first conditional Affirmative Form:
(both clauses)? (F) • If + Subject + Present Simple, Subject + will + Base Verb.
• Subject + will + Base Verb + if + Subject + Present Simple.
(The if clause may be first or second in the statement. The meaning doesn't change. When
the if clause appears first, a comma occurs after it. There is no need for a comma when it
comes second.)
Examples:
• If we win the race, we will get a trophy.
• We will get a trophy if we win the race.
2. What is the model sentence you will elicit to I will ask students about their favourite school sports and if they've ever participated in a
begin your presentation? Sports Day during the warmer. To set the scene for the class, I will display images of kids
competing in a relay race and taking home trophies.
I will provide a scenario where the students have to imagine that the next day is Sports Day
and ask them the following to elicit the model sentence:
"If our team wins the race, what will happen?"
This should help elicit the model sentence from the students.
Model sentence:
If we win the race, we'll get a trophy.
3. What are the negative and question Model sentence in negative form: If we don't win the race, we won't get a trophy.
(interrogative) forms of your model sentence? Form: If + Subject + Present Simple (negative), Subject + won't + Base Verb.
(You might find there is more than one possibility,
but you only need to show one negative and one Model sentence in question form: What will we get if we win the race? (Wh-question)
question, then analyse the forms.) Will we get a trophy if we win the race? (Yes/No question)

, Form: (Wh-word) + Will + Subject + Base Verb + if + Subject + Present Simple?
Will + Subject + Base Verb + if + Subject + Present Simple?
4. What is the function? (M) To discuss or likely future scenarios and the outcome that is likely to occur if the condition is
satisfied.
The first conditional serves to express real possibilities for the future, predictions, intentions
or plans that are dependent on a specific condition, while practising the first conditional
structure (if + present simple, will + base verb) precisely to interact accurately in real-life
situations.
5. What do students need to know about the Affirmative form
pronunciation, including sentence stress and The subject and will are usually contracted in spoken English.
intonation? (P) Examples: I'll, you'll, he'll, she'll, we'll, they'll.
(Think only about how the model sentence Negative form
would normally be said.) Will not is usually contracted to won't.
In the if clause, do not and does not are usually contracted to don't and doesn't.
Affirmative: The main stress is on the main verb and key content words.
If we WIN the RACE, we'll get a TROPHY.
Negative: Won't and the key content words are stressed.
If we don't WIN the RACE, we WON'T get a TROPHY.
Question form: In Wh-questions, the main stress is usually on the question word.
What will we get if we win the race?
Intonation
Yes/No questions: The voice usually rises at the end. ↗
Will we get a trophy if we win the race?
Affirmative and negative sentences: The voice normally falls at the end. ↘
If we win the race, we'll get a trophy.

form? (M) Students speculate about what might occur on Sports Day and talk about the probable
outcomes of various scenarios, such winning a race or taking home a trophy.
7. How will I try to elicit the first conditional from I'll ask children straightforward questions regarding tomorrow's race in the context of
the students? School Sports Day. I'll ask after displaying a photo of a relay race and a trophy:
"If our team wins the race, what will we get?"
Students should answer:
"We'll get a trophy."
I will then elicit the model sentence by combining their answer with the condition:
"If we win the race, we'll get a trophy."
8. How will I encourage students to analyse the The model sentence and two more examples will be written on the whiteboard by me.

telling them what it is? (F) presenting phase. Instead of telling students the rule, we will analyze the examples
collaboratively by identifying the subject, verb, and two clauses. This will allow students to
find the first conditional structure with my guidance.
9. What concept questions will I ask to check • Will we get a trophy if we lose the race? (No)
students understand how the form is being • Do we get a trophy only if we win? (Yes)
used/what it means? • Are we talking about the past, present or future? (Future)
• Has the race happened yet? (No)
• Is it possible that we will win the race? (Yes)
• Which part of the sentence is the condition? ("If we win the race")
• Which part of the sentence is the result? ("We'll get a trophy")

understand sentences such as 'If it's sunny
tomorrow, we'll go to the beach.'?
11. How will I get students to practise the With an emphasis on contractions, sentence stress, and intonation, I will model the target
pronunciation? sentence and have students repeat it both collectively (choral drilling) and individually
(individual drilling). After that, students will practice pronouncing both the sentence and
their own first conditional sentences in pairs. During this activity i will monitor them and
then provide feedback on their pronunciation.
12. What controlled practice activities will the 1. To practice the first conditional structure, students will complete a gap-fill exercise by
students do? writing the correct form of the verbs in brackets.
Example:
If our team (win) the race, we (get) a trophy.
(Answer: wins, will get.)
2. To create complete first conditional sentences, students will match conditional clauses
with the right result clauses. After finishing their sentences, they will read them aloud to a
partner before going through the answers as a class.
