1. Introduction
Learner motivation is widely recognised as one of the most significant psychological factors
influencing academic achievement in educational settings. Motivation determines the extent
to which learners engage in learning activities, persist when faced with academic
challenges and strive to achieve their educational goals. Educational psychologists argue
that motivated learners demonstrate higher levels of engagement, self-regulation and
academic performance than learners with low levels of motivation (Deci & Ryan, 2000;
Schunk & DiBenedetto, 2020). In the South African context, improving learner motivation
has become increasingly important because many secondary schools continue to
experience challenges such as poor academic performance, absenteeism and learner
disengagement despite ongoing educational reforms (Department of Basic Education [DBE],
2023). Understanding the relationship between learner motivation and academic
achievement is therefore essential for developing effective teaching strategies that promote
