The Narrator’s Relationship with Bra Todd and Gabriel Sanchez in Small
Things
In Small Things, the narrator encounters a variety of people who influence his
understanding of himself and the world around him. While some relationships are
brief, others leave a lasting impression on his personal development. Two significant
characters in the novel are Bra Todd and Gabriel Sanchez. Although both men
contribute to the narrator’s growth, they do so in different ways. Bra Todd develops a
close and supportive relationship with the narrator by offering guidance,
encouragement and practical advice, whereas Gabriel Sanchez influences him
mainly through shared experiences and observation. These relationships illustrate
that personal growth can result from both emotional support and meaningful
encounters with others (Langa, 2012).
Bra Todd is one of the narrator’s most important role models because he establishes
a relationship built on trust and mutual respect. From the beginning of their
interactions, Bra Todd treats the narrator with kindness and patience, making him
feel valued despite the difficulties he experiences. Instead of criticising or
discouraging him, Bra Todd encourages him to believe in his abilities and to remain
determined even when life becomes challenging. His advice helps the narrator
develop confidence and resilience, enabling him to face obstacles with greater
maturity. As a result, the narrator views Bra Todd as someone whose opinions and
actions deserve respect, making their relationship one of the strongest in the novel
(Langa, 2012).
