Objectives of Social Security Law in South Africa

Introduction

Social security law in South Africa is a branch of law that seeks to
protect individuals and households against poverty, vulnerability, and
social risks that may affect their ability to maintain a decent standard of
living. It establishes legal mechanisms through which the state provides
financial assistance, social insurance, and welfare services to people who
are unable to support themselves due to unemployment, old age,
disability, illness, or other social circumstances. The Constitution of the
Republic of South Africa, 1996, particularly section 27, recognises
everyone's right to have access to social security and obliges the state to
take reasonable legislative and other measures, within its available
resources, to progressively realise this right.

As a project manager working with social workers who assist vulnerable
individuals and communities, Lebo should understand the objectives of
social security law because they guide the administration and delivery of
social assistance and social insurance programmes.

Objectives of Social Security Law

1. To Reduce Poverty

One of the primary objectives of social security law is to reduce poverty.
Many South Africans experience financial hardship due to
unemployment, disability, illness, old age, or the death of a family
breadwinner. Social security programmes provide financial support to
these individuals and families, ensuring that they can meet their basic
needs.
