Chapter 1: Real Numbers



In this chapter, we explore the world of real numbers, which include both rational and irrational numbers. A

rational number can be expressed in the form p/q, while irrational numbers cannot. We study the Euclids

Division Lemma, which is a method used to find the Highest Common Factor (HCF) of two numbers. Another

key concept is the Fundamental Theorem of Arithmetic, which states that every composite number can be

expressed uniquely as a product of prime numbers, apart from the order of the factors.



We also learn how to determine whether the decimal expansion of a rational number is terminating or

non-terminating but repeating, using the prime factorization of the denominator.



Real-life Applications:

- Checking whether a number like 1/8 is terminating helps in decimal representation in finance.

- Prime factorization is useful in encryption algorithms in cyber security.



Fun Fact:

The number 2 is an irrational number discovered by the Greeks, and it cannot be written as a fraction.

Chapter 2: Polynomials



A polynomial is an algebraic expression made up of terms consisting of variables raised to whole-number

powers and multiplied by coefficients. In this chapter, we learn to identify types of polynomials based on their

degree: linear, quadratic, and cubic. We also study the zeroes of a polynomial and the relationship between

zeroes and coefficients in quadratic polynomials.



We also learn how to perform division of polynomials and apply the remainder theorem and factor theorem,

which help us understand the roots and factors of polynomials in a structured way.
