Thank you for your thoughtful question. As an Intermediate Phase Mathematics teacher,
I encounter this question often, and I appreciate the opportunity to explain why learning
about ancient number systems is valuable for your child's mathematical development.



Real-life relevance

Let’s say understanding ancient number systems helps learners appreciate the
mathematics they use daily. The CAPS document emphasises that learners should
"recognise that Mathematics is a creative part of human activity". When learners study
how the Sumerians and Babylonians developed a base-60 (sexagesimal) system, they
realise that the numbers we use today were not simply handed down but were
developed over thousands of years through human creativity and problem-solving. This
historical perspective makes mathematics feel more alive and relevant.



Remnants of ancient number systems are still visible in our everyday lives. We still
measure angles in 360 degrees and time in 60 minutes and 60 seconds because of the
Babylonian base-60 system. In my classroom, I use a practical example: when learners
read an analogue clock, they are interacting with an ancient number system. I ask them:
"Why are there 60 minutes in an hour?" This connects their daily experience to historical
mathematics.

, Studying different number systems develops flexibility in thinking. When learners
encounter the Roman numeral system (where I=1, V=5, X=10), they learn that numbers
can be represented in multiple ways. This prepares them for understanding that the
same number can be written as a fraction, decimal, or percentage in our modern
system. The CAPS document explicitly states that learners should develop
"representation of numbers in various ways".



Learning about ancient number systems builds cultural awareness and appreciation.
The Hindu-Arabic number system we use today originated in India and was transmitted
through Arabic scholars. This demonstrates how mathematical knowledge has been
shared across cultures and continents, aligning with the CAPS principle of "valuing
indigenous knowledge systems".



Conceptual understanding

Understanding the historical evolution of numeration systems deepens conceptual
understanding of our own number system. When learners discover that the Babylonians
used positional notation in their base-60 system, they better appreciate the positional
nature of our decimal system. I demonstrate this in class by comparing: in 345, the 3
represents 300 because of its position, just as in Babylonian cuneiform, the position of
symbols determined their value.

Also the study of ancient number systems illuminates the revolutionary importance of
zero. The CAPS document highlights that learners should recognise "0 in terms of its
additive property". When learners discover that ancient number systems like Roman
numerals had no symbol for zero, they understand why zero was such a breakthrough.
This makes the concept of zero more memorable and meaningful.

Last, comparing different number systems builds learners' ability to think abstractly.
When we contrast the Egyptian base-10 system (which used hieroglyphs and was not
positional) with our Hindu-Arabic system, learners begin to understand that numbers are
