 Question 1

1.1. As an Intermediate Phase Mathematics teachers, how will answer if your learner’ parent
asks: “Why should my child learn about ancient number systems when modern mathematics
uses the Hindu-Arabic system?”

Dear Parent,

Thank you for your thoughtful question. It’s a very valid one and something many parents wonder
about. You're right to ask why we spend time on systems like the Roman or Egyptian number
systems when we all use the modern Hindu-Arabic system daily.

The short answer is that we are not teaching ancient systems as a replacement for our own, but as a
tool to build a much deeper understanding of the system we do use. This learning is not about the
past, but about building essential mathematical skills for the future. Let me explain using our
curriculum and classroom examples.

Real-Life Relevance
At its core, this topic is about developing critical thinking and an appreciation of the incredible
system your child uses every day. The relevance is not about using ancient symbols, but about
understanding the underlying structures of all number systems, including our own.

 Seeing the Value of Place Value: Our modern decimal system is so efficient that its genius can
be invisible. By studying a system like the Roman numerals (I, V, X, L, C), your child can
directly compare. In Roman numerals, the value of a symbol doesn't change based on its
position (X is always 10). This allows them to appreciate the power of place value in our
system. They can see how a '3' in the tens place has a completely different value than a '3' in
the hundreds place (MIP1501, Study Guide. Page 12). This directly supports the CAPS
requirement for learners to develop a sense of large numbers, which is crucial for handling
money, understanding population figures, or interpreting data in the news.

 Becoming a Smart Consumer: The concepts of bases (like base-10 or base-60) are not just
ancient history. We encounter them daily. Time is a great example. We ask, "Why does an hour
have 60 minutes?" This is a remnant of the ancient base-60 (sexagesimal) system (MIP1501,
Study Guide. Page 15). When your child learns about these different bases, it answers the
"why" behind these common measurements, helping them understand the world around them
and see the connection between mathematics and everyday life.

 Developing Problem-Solving Skills: When learners work with a different system, they are
forced to think flexibly. The problem "IV" means 4 but "VI" means 6 (MIP1501, Study Guide.
Page 12) is a simple puzzle that pushes them to think about the rules of a system (addition and
subtraction) rather than just memorizing. This develops problem-solving skills that are directly
applicable when they encounter new mathematical concepts or solve complex, non-routine
problems as required in CAPS.
