UNISA
DUE: 15 JULY 2026
, The Creative Arts project entitled "My Home, My Earth, My Future" integrates Visual
Arts and Drama to assist Grade 4 learners in exploring their identity, their
environment, and the impact of climate change on their communities. The project
enables learners to express themselves creatively while developing environmental
awareness and responsible citizenship. Through artistic creation and dramatic
performance, learners investigate how human activities affect the natural
environment and identify practical actions that can contribute towards protecting the
planet. This integrated approach promotes creativity, collaboration, critical thinking
and environmental responsibility, all of which are central to the aims of the South
African Curriculum and Assessment Policy Statement (CAPS) for Creative Arts
(Department of Basic Education [DBE], 2011).
Description of the Project
The project begins with a classroom discussion in which learners introduce
themselves and describe their communities, cultural traditions and natural
surroundings. The teacher facilitates conversations about local environmental
challenges such as littering, water pollution, illegal dumping, veld fires, droughts and
flooding. Learners compare photographs of healthy environments with images
showing environmental degradation caused by climate change and human activities.
