The Novel
The Narrator’s Relationships with Bra Todd and Gabriel Sanchez in Small Things

In Nthikeng Mohlele’s novel Small Things, the narrator’s encounters with different
people shape his understanding of identity, belonging, ambition and personal growth.
Among the important relationships in the novel are those he develops with Bra Todd
and Gabriel Sanchez. Although both men influence the narrator through their
connection to journalism, knowledge and creativity, their relationships with him differ
significantly. Bra Todd represents a close, personal and almost mentor-like relationship
during the narrator’s youth, while Gabriel Sanchez represents an intellectual friendship
based on shared interests and a deeper appreciation of writing and journalism. This
essay will discuss the similarities and differences between these two relationships by
focusing on their influence on the narrator, the nature of their connections, and the
themes of mentorship and self-discovery.
The narrator’s relationship with Bra Todd is mainly characterised by guidance,
admiration and emotional dependence. In the extract, the narrator describes himself as
being “like a stray dog” searching for meaning, which suggests that he is young,
uncertain and looking for direction. Bra Todd becomes a source of stability in his life
because he provides knowledge and companionship. The narrator spends time with him
listening to records, polishing his shoes, helping with household tasks and learning
“sophisticated ways to woo a lady.” These details show that Bra Todd is not simply a
friend but a figure who teaches him about life beyond formal education. Through Bra
Todd, the narrator gains exposure to culture, confidence and adult experiences.
