QUESTION 1: Multicultural Communication Skills, Contextual Communication
Styles and Their Application

Multicultural communication is a critical competence in contemporary administrative
and business environments because organisations increasingly operate within
culturally diverse, multilingual and globalised contexts. Effective communication
across cultures enhances organisational efficiency by reducing misunderstandings,
improving collaboration and strengthening relationships between employees, clients
and stakeholders. Communication scholars emphasise that communication
effectiveness is not only determined by language proficiency but also by cultural
values, social norms, contextual interpretation and interpersonal sensitivity (Hall,
1976; Gudykunst, 2004). In this regard, multicultural communication requires both
theoretical understanding of communication styles and practical skills that enable
individuals to adapt their behaviour appropriately in diverse environments.

One of the most influential theoretical frameworks for understanding multicultural
communication is Edward T. Hall’s distinction between low-context and high-context
communication. These concepts explain how meaning is conveyed differently across
cultures and remain widely used in intercultural communication studies (Hall, 1976;
Samovar, Porter & McDaniel, 2017). In addition to these theoretical models, effective
multicultural communication also requires specific interpersonal skills that enable
individuals to overcome cultural barriers and communicate inclusively.

Low-Context Communication

Low-context communication refers to a communication style in which meaning is
conveyed primarily through explicit, direct and unambiguous verbal or written
messages. In low-context cultures, individuals rely heavily on spoken or written
language rather than shared cultural understanding, assumptions or non-verbal cues
to interpret meaning (Hall, 1976; Ferreira & Groenewald, 2021).

This communication style is typically associated with individualistic societies where
clarity, accountability and precision are highly valued. Messages are structured
logically, and communicators are expected to express themselves clearly to avoid
ambiguity. Gudykunst (2004) argues that low-context communication is particularly
effective in multicultural business environments because it reduces uncertainty and
