1.1.1 Definition of First Additional Language (1 mark)

A First Additional Language (FAL) is a language that learners acquire and learn in addition to
their home language. It is usually used for communication, learning, and teaching in educational

language other than their mother tongue (Department of Basic Education [DBE], 2011).

Activity 1: Basic Interpersonal Communication Skills (BICS)

Activity Title: “My Weekend Partner Talk”

Grade: 2 English First Additional Language

Objective: To develop learners’ everyday conversational English through social interaction.

Description of the Activity:

The teacher pairs learners and asks them to discuss what they did over the weekend. Before the
activity begins, the teacher displays sentence starters on the board such as:

 “I went to…”
 “I played with…”
 “My favourite part was…”
 “I enjoyed…”

Learners take turns asking and answering simple questions about their weekend experiences. The
teacher moves around the classroom, providing support where necessary and encouraging
learners to use English during the conversation. After the discussion, a few learners share their
responses with the whole class.

Application of BICS Theory:
