ASSIGNMENT 2 2026
UNIQUE NO.
DUE DATE: 6 JULY 2026
, THE INFLUENCE OF RESEARCH CONTEXT ON EDUCATIONAL RESEARCH
Introduction
Educational research plays an important role in understanding and improving teaching, learning,
and educational systems. However, research does not occur in a vacuum. It is influenced by
various social, political, economic, cultural, historical, and environmental conditions that shape
the questions researchers ask, the methods they employ, and the knowledge they produce. These
conditions are commonly referred to as the context of research. Research contexts operate at
different levels, namely the micro level, which focuses on individuals and immediate
environments; the meso level, which concerns institutions and communities; and the macro level,
which involves broader political, economic, historical, and global systems. The purpose of this
essay is to explain how research contexts influence educational research and to examine how
research itself contributes to shaping educational and social realities. The essay further explores
the impact of broader forces such as neoliberalism, neocolonialism, capitalism, globalization,
and the Anthropocene on educational research.
Understanding Research Contexts
Research context refers to the circumstances, conditions, and environments within which
research takes place. These contexts influence the identification of research problems, the
selection of methodologies, and the interpretation of findings. In educational research, context is
particularly important because educational issues are embedded within specific social and
cultural realities.
Micro contexts refer to the immediate environments and experiences of individuals. These
include learners, teachers, classrooms, families, identities, languages, cultures, and communities.
Meso contexts refer to institutional settings such as schools, universities, departments,
educational policies, and funding arrangements. Macro contexts involve broader social forces
such as government policies, economic systems, historical developments, globalization, and
environmental challenges.
