Interpreting Creative Arts in CAPS (30 Marks)

1.1 The CAPS document emphasises integration between the Visual and Performing Arts.
Using the scenario of a classroom with limited resources, explain how a single classroom
activity could integrate these two art forms effectively. Focus on the teacher's role in
facilitating this integration and how it benefits the learner's holistic development. (15 Marks)

The Curriculum and Assessment Policy Statement (CAPS) for Creative Arts in the
Intermediate Phase emphasises that learners should experience the interconnected nature of
the arts through meaningful and integrated activities. The integration of Visual Arts and
Performing Arts enables learners to engage creatively with their environment while
simultaneously developing cognitive, emotional, social, physical, and cultural competencies.
Even within classrooms characterised by limited resources, teachers can successfully
facilitate integrated learning experiences by drawing on learners' lived experiences and
utilising inexpensive or recycled materials (DBE, 2011).

A suitable classroom activity would involve learners creating and performing a dramatic
interpretation of a traditional South African folktale or community story. The teacher could
begin by facilitating a discussion about stories that learners have heard from their families or
communities, encouraging them to identify themes such as ubuntu, honesty, perseverance,
respect, or cooperation. Learners would then work collaboratively in small groups to
transform the selected story into a short performance.

The integration of Visual Arts would occur when learners design and construct simple artistic
materials required for the performance. Using readily available resources such as old
newspapers, cardboard boxes, recycled containers, fabric scraps, leaves, crayons, and paint,
