600-700 word Essay on Using Authentic Materials and the Internet
Please write the essay under the four headings given.
a) The value of using authentic materials in foreign language teaching:
According to (Richard, 2004), authentic materials have an extraordinary value because they are
applicable to “the real-world goals”. They make it possible for students to be informed about what
is happening in the world they live in. This provides a fundamental educational value. Authentic
material helps students to use English in the real world and assists them to produce a learning
tactic for learning English. It is simpler to find something in authentic materials that will interest
students and inspires them to read and enjoy reading as they cover topics of large interest to
students, especially if students are given the opportunity to talk about such topics in the
classroom.
b) Reasons for the selection of this text and the 12 vocabulary items. Rationale for changes to
text, if applicable.
I chose this text because it is extremely relevant to students who are advanced C1-C2 adults, living
/studying/planning to study or working in an English-speaking country and would like to improve
their fluency. The text gives the students opportunities to relate to the experiences that they may
be already experiencing or will further experience in the future while living/working or studying in
English speaking countries. I chose the 12 vocabulary items because is extremely important that
students understand unfamiliar words in any text to enable them to thoroughly understand the
whole text. Vocabulary kicks in any of the student’s programs because not knowing the words in
the text has a significantly negative effect on students due to the lack of understanding. I did not
make changes to the text, however the text was a bit long. I just shortened it by extracting the first
+- five hundred words. I did not want the text to be long as I prefer quality teaching and learning
rather than quantity teaching and learning.
c) Why my activities are appropriate for this class:
My activities are appropriate to the class because firstly, they give the students a chance to use
and understand vocabulary used in the text, then they move on further to do their own research
which is very important (Doing their own research helps them to find out important things on their
own while making use of technology) and consolidation what the students have learnt by giving
them opportunities to debate about important things that are relevant in living at English speaking
countries. Young students are more adept with technological skills, so by integrating technology
(doing online activity) into the classroom, immediately helps students learn better and faster. All
