TMN3703 ASSIGNMENT 2 2026

DUE 30 JUNE 2026

Question 1

1.1. There are different ways of conducting assessments in Life Skills. Using AI,
define each of the following types of assessment:

1.1.1 Assignment

An assignment is a task that gives learners a problem to solve. It has clear instructions
and a set length. It checks how well learners can use their knowledge, skills and values
in different situations.

1.1.2 Case study

A case study is a detailed story about a real or made‑up situation. The story can come
from a book, newspaper, magazine, video or radio. It helps teachers see if learners can
take what they have learned and apply it to a new situation they have not seen before.

1.1.3 Examination

An examination is a formal written test at the end of the school year. For Grade 4 and 5
it lasts at least 45 minutes, and for Grade 6 it lasts at least 75 minutes. It covers
everything learners did during the whole year and uses different types of questions that
ask learners to use what they know.

, 1.1.4 Design and make

Design and make is an assessment where learners create a real product. They must
plan it, make it, and write about it. This shows that they understand the knowledge and
skills behind the product.

1.1.5 Test

A test is a written assessment given at the end of the second term. It covers only the
work done in the first two terms. It checks how well learners remember facts,
understand ideas and can use their knowledge.

1.2 Definitions based on the study guide

1.2.1 Assignment

According to the TMN3703 Study Guide, an assignment is “a problem‑solving exercise
with clear guidelines and of a specified length” that allows for “a more holistic
assessment of knowledge, skills and values and their application in different contexts”

(TMN3703, p. 19).

1.2.2 Case study

The study guide explains that a case study “will involve a detailed description of a
specific situation or phenomenon” that can be “real or hypothetical” and can be taken
from “a book, newspaper, magazine, video or the radio”. It “will enable the teacher to
assess whether learners can apply the knowledge, skills and values to an unfamiliar
context”

(TMN3703, p. 19).
