, QUESTION 1
1.1 Define neuropsychology. (6)
Neuropsychology is a branch of psychology that studies the relationship between the brain, nervous
system, and behaviour. It focuses on how brain functioning affects emotions, thinking, memory,
learning, language, and behaviour. Neuropsychology also examines how injuries, trauma, or diseases
affecting the brain influence a person’s cognitive and emotional functioning.
1.2 Two examples of neuro-physical disabilities Thandi may have developed from the accident. (4)
1. Paralysis or weakness of limbs – Thandi may experience difficulty moving parts of her body due
to damage to areas of the brain responsible for movement and coordination.
2. Speech and language impairment – Brain trauma may affect her ability to understand language
or express herself clearly.
Other possible disabilities may include memory problems, poor balance, visual impairment, or
difficulties with coordination.
1.3.1 Explain brain plasticity. (4)
Brain plasticity, also called neuroplasticity, refers to the brain’s ability to adapt, reorganise, and form
new neural connections after injury or trauma. The brain can recover certain functions by allowing
healthy parts of the brain to take over functions that were damaged. Brain plasticity helps individuals
learn new skills and recover from physical or emotional trauma over time.
1.3.2 How brain plasticity will allow recovery from PTSR. (4)
Brain plasticity will help Thandi recover from Post-Traumatic Stress Reaction (PTSR) because the brain
can gradually reorganise itself through therapy, medication, and supportive experiences. Psychotherapy
can help her develop healthier emotional responses and coping strategies, while medication may reduce
anxiety and stress symptoms.
As Thandi receives treatment and support, new neural pathways can develop, helping her regain
emotional stability, improve memory and concentration, and reduce traumatic reactions. Positive social
support from family, teachers, and peers will also strengthen recovery.
1.4 Brain areas that may have been affected by the accident. (7)
Thandi’s difficulties with receptive and expressive language suggest that certain language areas of the
brain may have been damaged during the accident.
