During the AFL1501 module, my understanding of language, identity, culture, and community developed
in many important ways. Before starting the module, I viewed language mainly as a tool for
communication. I believed people simply used language to speak to one another and exchange
information. I also thought culture and identity were mostly connected to traditions, clothing, and food.
However, throughout this module, I learned that language is much deeper than that because it shapes
how people see themselves, interact with others, and experience belonging within communities.
One of the most meaningful lessons I learned was the strong connection between language and identity.
Before studying this module, I did not fully realise how much a person’s language reflects their
background, values, and sense of self. I learned that the language people speak often carries their
history, emotions, and cultural identity. For example, when people speak their home language, they
often feel comfortable, respected, and understood. This made me appreciate multilingualism and
cultural diversity more deeply.
The module also helped me understand how culture influences communication. Different communities
use language differently depending on their customs, beliefs, and values. I became more aware that
gestures, greetings, tone, and forms of address all carry cultural meaning. In many African communities,
respect is shown through polite greetings and respectful forms of address. I realised that
communication is not only about words but also about relationships and social values.
Another important aspect that stood out for me was Ubuntu. Before this module, I understood Ubuntu
only as helping others. However, I learned that Ubuntu is a way of life that emphasises humanity,
compassion, respect, and interconnectedness. The idea that “a person is a person through other
people” helped me understand the importance of community support and cooperation in everyday life.
This concept reminded me of how people in my community support each other during funerals,
celebrations, and difficult times.
The module also changed how I think about diversity. I learned that people from different cultures and
language backgrounds should not be judged negatively because of their differences. Instead, diversity
should be respected and celebrated. This understanding encouraged me to become more open-minded
and sensitive toward others.
Overall, AFL1501 helped me develop a broader understanding of language, identity, culture, and
community. The module taught me that language is closely connected to people’s experiences and
relationships. It also encouraged me to value respect, inclusion, and empathy in multicultural
environments. These lessons will continue to guide me in both my personal life and academic journey.
