Question 1: Modernist vs. Postmodernist Paradigms (10 Marks)
The shift from modernism to postmodernism represents a fundamental rewrite in how science,
psychology, and social sciences understand the world.
1. Assumptions About Truth and Knowledge

,  Modernism: Operates on an epistemological assumption of an objective, external reality. Truth
is singular, foundational, and waiting to be discovered through empirical science, logic, and the
scientific method. Knowledge is seen as linear, quantifiable, and universal across contexts.
 Postmodernism: Rejects the idea of a single "grand narrative" or universal truth. Instead, it
views truth as pluralistic, relative, and socially constructed through language, culture, and
interaction. Knowledge is not discovered, but rather co-created within specific historical and
relational contexts.
2. The Role of the Observer
 Modernism: The observer is an independent, detached expert. Much like a traditional scientist
in a lab, the observer looks at a system from the outside looking in, assuming their presence does
not alter or influence what is being observed.
 Postmodernism: The observer is inextricably part of the observed system. Absolute
objectivity is considered an illusion because the observer brings their own biases, language, and
social positioning to the process. Observation is always a subjective act of interpretation.
Question 2: First-Order vs. Second-Order Cybernetics (30 Marks)
Cybernetics shifted family therapy away from individual intrapsychic psychology toward systemic
thinking. However, the field itself evolved drastically from its initial engineering roots (first-order) to a
self-reflexive framework (second-order).

2. The Role of the Therapist/Observer
First-Order Cybernetics: The Outside Expert
In this approach, the therapist enters the room as an expert consultant who stands outside the family
system.
