, 1. Five Advantages of creative arts teaching
Creating art is an amazing way for children to make choices and solve problems. I
also believe that each and every step involves making a decision: what color to
use, how to make a line, what size to make any given object. With every choice
the object becomes more and more of their own. Everyone has an imagination.
Art takes it a step further. Through art, children create something that, until that
point, was only imagined. Thus, they create visual manifestations of abstract
ideas.
 Creative arts teaching develops critical thinking, arts education develops
learners to think critically by encouraging them to compare and critique multiple
viewpoints of their peers and explore new ideas. In addition critical thinking skills
are regarded as essential in preparing learners for both school and the work
place, where they will be confronted with finding solutions to problems and
creating new ideas (Montgomerie & Ferguson, 1999; Stevenson & Deasy, 2005).
You can give learners the same set of crayons, same colors and the same picture
to color but I guarantee you that 90% of the pictures you get back won’t be the
same. Art is unique, abstract and powerful.
 Creative arts teaching builds collaboration skills, not only are learners
constructively criticizing others’ art and receiving feedback on their own, they are
also listening to others’ ideas and learning to work as an active member of a
group to achieve a common goal (Heath & Roach, 1999; Malin, 2012). Learners
get to understand that they are all unique and different, even if they are all tasked
to color, draw or paint something, their art does not have to be or look the same
because their imagination boxes aren’t the same but different, which makes it
more fun and interesting and gives them a chance to also see how far they can all
imagine.
 Creative arts teaching promotes creative engagement in communities,
learners get more involved in the community as performers and creators or
consumers of arts (Rabkin & Hedberg, 2011). It’s really amazing, I’ve seen and
experienced this myself back in high school there used to be so many dancers,
painters, singers and poet crews. There’d be social markets during the school
holidays and people from our communities would actually pay to come watch the
performances, there’d be stages in the competitions and prizes to be won so most
people would actually give their all in which ever art they loved.
 Creative arts teaching prepares learners for success in the workplace,
basically learners creative thinking skills that are necessary for greater
achievement in their chosen careers improve drastically (Licthenberg, Woock &
