1.1. Define sociology in your own words.
Sociology is the study of how people behave in groups, how they relate to each
other, and how society works. It looks at ideas, feelings, and behaviors that last over
time and are shared by everyone born into a society. Sociology also studies how
groups, organizations, and whole societies interact with each other. Important early
thinkers in sociology include Karl Marx, Emile Durkheim, and Max Weber. The word
"sociology" comes from Latin and Greek words meaning "the study of

1.2. Describe education according to your understanding.
Education is the process of gaining knowledge, learning to think and judge, and
preparing for adult life. It is not fixed but always changing. Education is a way of
socializing people and helps them learn skills. The word "education" comes from
Latin, meaning "to bring out what is inside." It helps to develop human values that
are already within each person.
1.3. Explain what is meant by the following terms and give one example of
each:
A) Assimilation
This is when a person or group takes on the social and psychological traits of

B) Society
This is people living in groups and the setting in which they live and relate to each
other. Societies can be old-fashioned or modern. This course focuses on modern
societies because our school system comes from modern, industrial societies.
