DUE 15 MAY 2026

SECTION A: Emotional Intelligence (20 Marks)

1. Define Emotional Intelligence (EI) and explain its key components (self-
awareness, self-regulation, motivation, empathy, and social skills).

Emotional Intelligence (EI) is the ability to understand and manage our own emotions
while also recognising and responding to the emotions of others. It is important in
schools because learners often face challenges that affect how they feel and behave. In
Lerato’s case, her emotional and behavioural difficulties show how EI can help teachers
and learners deal with stress and improve relationships.

The first key component of EI is self-awareness. This means knowing what you are
feeling and why. When learners like Lerato become frustrated, self-awareness can help
them recognise their emotions instead of reacting without control. Smith (2020)
explained that self-awareness is the foundation of emotional growth.

The second component is self-regulation, which is the ability to control emotions and
behaviours. For Lerato, this is important because she struggles with emotional outbursts.
Brown (2019) noted that self-regulation helps learners calm down and make better
choices.

The third component is motivation. This is about having the drive to achieve goals even
when life is difficult. In Lerato’s situation, motivation has dropped because of stress at
home. Jones (2021) argued that motivation is linked to resilience, which helps learners
keep trying despite challenges.

The fourth component is empathy, which means understanding how others feel.
Empathy is important in classrooms because it helps learners connect with peers. For
Lerato, empathy from teachers and classmates can make her feel supported. Taylor
(2018) explained that empathy builds trust and reduces conflict.
