Subject matter: what we see in an artwork
There are five main types:
1: imaginary/fantasy: Taken from fantasy, dreams,
feelings, ideas & imagination.
2: Organic/still life: Taken from the natural world (people,
trees, fruit etc.)
3: Inorganic: Taken from the cultural world (buildings,
streets and cars)
4: Figurative/portraits: Objects that can be seen in the
natural world and therefore recognizable
5: Non-figurative/abstract: This refers to objects that
cannot be seen in the natural world.
2: Theme/topic or content:
this refers to the ‘’story’’ or the message the artist is trying
to visualize.
3: Format
This refers to the shape of the artwork. Is it 2D or 3D
