Psychological Questionnaire for Selecting Community Anti-Poaching Unit
Members
Questionnaire formulated by:
Questionnaire Scenario
Wildlife conservation in Africa, particularly in regions affected by poaching, requires
individuals who are not only physically capable but also psychologically suited to
operate in high-pressure, socially complex, and ethically demanding environments. The
purpose of this psychological questionnaire is to assist in the selection of candidates
for a community-based anti-poaching unit, where teamwork, resilience, interpersonal
functioning, and a sense of purpose are critical for success.
This questionnaire is designed to assess specific personality characteristics and
behavioural tendencies as conceptualised within the theories of Alfred Adler and
Karen Horney. These theories are particularly suitable for this scenario because they
provide insight into how individuals relate to others, respond to challenges, and strive
toward goals within a social context.
According to Adler’s theory of individual psychology, human behaviour is goal-oriented
and driven by a striving for superiority, which is expressed through the development of a
unique lifestyle and a sense of social interest (Adler, 1930). Social interest, defined as a
concern for the welfare of others and the community, is particularly relevant in the
context of anti-poaching work, where cooperation, ethical responsibility, and
commitment to collective goals are essential. Furthermore, Adler emphasises the
importance of courage, resilience, and the ability to overcome feelings of inferiority, all
of which are critical traits for individuals working in demanding and potentially
dangerous environments.
Karen Horney’s psychoanalytic social theory complements Adler’s perspective by
focusing on interpersonal styles, specifically the ways in which individuals relate to
others through movements towards, against, or away from people (Horney, 1945). In
