QUESTION 1: TEACHING A HOME LANGUAGE IN A MULTICULTURAL CONTEXT

1.1 Explain the difference between code-switching, code-mixing, and
translanguaging.

Code-switching is when a speaker changes from one language to another during a
conversation, usually consciously and for a specific reason. The switch can happen
between sentences or at a natural pause. The study guide gives the example of a
person speaking isiZulu at home and English at work, then reporting a work decision in
isiZulu but using the exact English phrase for accuracy:“ukuthi the costing of our
services will from now on be done on an account based practice” Code-switching is
often used to accommodate a listener, to quote someone accurately, or to clarify a
concept.
