1. Main information in the CAPS document

The CAPS document for Life Skills (Grades 4–6) is a comprehensive national policy that
specifies what should be taught and assessed in Life Skills during the Intermediate
Phase. It provides detailed guidance on the subject’s purpose, specific aims, time
allocation, and the content to be covered each term across three study areas: Personal
and Social Well-being (PSW), Physical Education (PE), and Creative Arts (which
includes Performing Arts and Visual Arts). The document also includes an Annual
Teaching Plan (ATP) with term-by-term topics, a programme of assessment, and
guidelines for recording, reporting, and moderation. It replaces previous curriculum
statements and aims to give teachers clear, step-by-step direction to ensure consistent
and quality teaching and learning.
