 Question 1

1. With reference to the text provided, answer the following questions:

1.1. Explain what is understood by the “indigenous” people of Southern Africa.

Based on the extract from the prescribed textbook (Johannes Seroto et al., 2020), “indigenous”
people of Southern Africa refer to the original inhabitants of the region who developed and
maintained distinct cultural, social, and educational systems long before the arrival of European
colonial powers. From the text, several key characteristics define these indigenous groups:

The text specifically identifies the San and Khoi peoples as indigenous to Southern Africa. The San
are described as hunter-gatherers who survived for thousands of years using Stone Age technology,
hunting large game such as antelope, buffalo, and eland using bows and arrows, snares, and
slow-poison technologies (Johannes Seroto et al., 2020). The Khoi are presented as skilled
pastoralists and craftworkers who made bags, clothing, and blankets from animal skins, and used
reeds to make mats for sleeping and covering their houses (Johannes Seroto et al., 2020).

Indigenous people are characterised by their unique methods of knowledge transmission. The text
emphasises that “teaching was by showing, with demonstrations of different skill sets for the
younger generation to observe” (Johannes Seroto et al., 2020). This non-formal technology education
was passed from generation to generation, with hunting techniques existing for centuries before
being transmitted to younger generations.

Indigenous people possessed sophisticated cognitive and practical skills that demonstrate advanced
understanding of their environment. They could locate seasons of the year, knew precisely where
medicinal and food plants grew, collected resources without damaging the environment, and
followed antelope migrations to locate water sources (Johannes Seroto et al., 2020). The use of
snares, which “operate out-of-sight, but not out-of-mind,” demonstrates high-level cognition and the
ability to grasp and incorporate action across space and time (Johannes Seroto et al., 2020).

Indigenous people engaged in language socialisation as a distinct characteristic of their education.
Language acquisition produced culturally competent members of society, and through language,
children learned about cultural practices and constructed their social world (Johannes Seroto et al.,
2020). Older people enjoyed storytelling, proverbs, and tales interwoven with social and individual
identity.

Thus, indigenous people of Southern Africa are understood as original inhabitants who developed
self-sufficient, sustainable ways of living, learning, and teaching through practical demonstration,
environmental knowledge, sophisticated hunting technologies, and rich oral traditions—all of which
functioned effectively before colonial disruption.
