ENG2611 Assignment 1 (COMPLETE ANSWERS) Semester 1 2026 - DUE 29 April 2026. There are many ideas related to reading. Reading helps us to understand our immediate surroundings (street signs and shop names); to understand the world around us (newspapers and textbooks); to be involved with other people (social media and visual literacy) and to gain academic knowledge by critically reading, analysing and interpreting academic texts. (TUT501, 2020: 8) According to Leland et al (2013), another aspect to keep in mind when reading is that we need to understand that texts often embrace cultural ideas and, therefore, we should be sensitive to the ideas associated with specific cultures when reading. We must learn to understand that a text presents certain characters favourably and others unfavourably and understanding how characters work with or against each other helps us to recognise the themes of a text. (TUT501, 2020: 13) ENG2611/ Assignment 1 3 QUESTION Reading is an essential skill that helps individuals understand their environment, engage with others, and succeed academically. It also plays an important role in developing critical thinking through engagement with different types of texts, especially literature. Write an essay of 350 words in which you discuss the importance of reading in both everyday life and academic contexts. In your essay, you must: 1) Provide an introductory paragraph in which you outline the topic and your understanding of the question. 2) Write body paragraphs in which you: Clearly explain how reading helps you understand the world around you, using relevant examples. Discuss the difference between critical reading and simply recognising or understanding words. Explain why literature is important for developing critical reading skills in academic life. Provide reasons why learners should read literary texts. 3) Provide a concluding paragraph in which you summarise the points discussed in your body paragraphs.
