SOPHIA 202 Week 4 Journal Critical Reading & Writing (2) Keep in mind that there are no right or wrong answers. You will be assessed on the depth of your reflection, so take this opportunity to inspire personal thought and ideas. ……………………………………………………………………………………………………… Reflecting on your reading and writing Directions: Review Sections 4.3 – 4.6 in your text and think back to your early experiences with reading and writing. Then, respond thoroughly and honestly to each prompt. 1. What made reading fun for you in the past? What made it a chore? Describe any strategies that you use or read about in Sections 4.3 or 4.4 that you would like to use to help you become a more critical reader. Reading has never been my cup of tea, but I find that when I am reading about something that I have a passion or interest for, it is much more enjoyable. I’ve also found that reading small sections at a time and processing the information before moving onto the next… is less painful for me. Reading becomes a chore for me when I have to read something for school “just because”, but have no application to apply what I’ve read when finished. Reading an entire book and writing a paper on it, has never been my strong suit. I find that it is also a chore when I am assigned a chapter to read, but the information I need is maybe 25% of that reading material. Something I would like to try after reading sections 4.3 – 4.6 is more exploring. I tend to just jump into the material and pull as much from it as I can, as quickly as I can. I think that if I took the time to actually explore before doing a closer reading. 2. For some students, expressing their thoughts in writing comes naturally and easily. For other students “writer’s block” is a regular occurrence, and they find it difficult to articulate their thoughts. To what degree do you enjoy or dislike writing? Describe any strategies that you use or read about in Sections 4.5 and 4.6 that you would like to use to help you become a more critical writer. Honestly, it depends on my head space and my mood. What I am writing about is a huge factor in my enjoyment level. I feel like I either nail it or struggle with the entire paper, but it always comes back to me either feeling like I didn’t have enough knowledge of the topic to begin with, or I am not in a good space to think freely and clearly.
