TITLE: The Impact of Social Media Use on Anxiety Levels Among University
Students in South Africa

ABSTRACT

Social media has become an integral part of modern communication, particularly among
university students. While these platforms offer opportunities for connection, information
sharing, and academic engagement, there is growing concern regarding their potential
negative effects on mental health. One of the most significant concerns is the increasing
prevalence of anxiety among students, which may be influenced by patterns of social
media use.

This study aims to examine the relationship between social media use and anxiety
levels among university students in South Africa. The research is grounded in cognitive-
behavioural theory, which suggests that individuals’ thoughts and behaviours influence
their emotional experiences (Beck, 2011). A quantitative research approach will be
employed, using a survey design to collect data from a sample of university students.
Standardised questionnaires will be used to measure both the extent of social media
usage and levels of anxiety.

The data will be analysed using statistical techniques to determine whether a significant
relationship exists between the variables. The findings are expected to contribute to a
better understanding of the psychological effects of social media and provide insights
for interventions aimed at improving student mental health. This study is relevant to
educators, mental health professionals, and policymakers concerned with student well-
being.
