, THE ROLE OF BUSINESS FUNCTIONS IN ADVANCING CORPORATE
CITIZENSHIP: A CASE STUDY OF SHOPRITE HOLDINGS LTD
PART A: INTRODUCTION
Shoprite Holdings Ltd is a JSE listed retail group and one of the largest food retailers
in Africa. It is selected as a good example of corporate citizenship because of its
strong focus on food security, community upliftment, and responsible business
practices. The 2025 Integrated Report shows that the company plays a key role in
providing affordable food to millions of South Africans, while also supporting social
initiatives such as hunger relief programmes and skills development. The report also
highlights environmental efforts such as energy saving and waste reduction, which
show a commitment to sustainability (Shoprite Integrated Report, 2025).
This essay examines how corporate citizenship is implemented through key
business functions. It first explains the role of different functions in supporting
responsible practices. It then analyses three functions at Shoprite and evaluates how
they contribute to sustainable development. The discussion also assesses whether
the company’s actions match its stated commitments (Botha, 2016; Shoprite
Integrated Report, 2025).
PART B: HOW CORPORATE CITIZENSHIP IS ACTIONED THROUGH BUSINESS
FUNCTIONS
1. Key business functions and their role in corporate citizenship
Corporate citizenship is implemented through different business functions that guide
how an organisation operates in society. Each function supports responsible
behaviour and sustainable development.
The human resource function ensures fair labour practices and employee
wellbeing. It focuses on skills development, equal opportunities, and safe working
conditions. When employees are treated fairly, the organisation builds trust and
promotes social responsibility. This function also supports transformation and
diversity in the workplace (Botha, 2016).
