Question: Critically discuss how the gradual growth of parliamentary power in
Britain during the 19th century reflected the principles of liberal democracy. In your
response, consider the influence of the French Revolution’s legacy on
British political developments and public discourse.
How the Growth of Parliament in 19th Century Britain Showed the Ideas of Liberal
Democracy
The 19th century was a time of big change in British politics. During this period,
Parliament slowly gained more power, and more people were allowed to vote. This
helped Britain move towards becoming a modern liberal democracy. The growth of
parliamentary power showed important ideas of liberal democracy. These include
protecting individual freedom, having a government that represents the people, and
following the rule of law. However, these changes did not happen quickly or in a radical
way. Instead, they were slow and careful. Many leaders in Britain were afraid of
revolution, especially after seeing what happened during the French Revolution.
Because of this, they chose to make gradual changes rather than sudden ones. The
reforms that took place were a response to pressure from people in Britain, as well as
events happening in other countries. Moreover, the expansion of parliamentary power
helped to build liberal democratic ideas in Britain, but it was done in a cautious and
controlled way.
