ENG2612 ASSIGNMENT 1 2026

DUE 15 APRIL 2026

QUESTION ONE

Write a well‑developed analytical paragraph in which you critically examine how
linguistic and stylistic choices in EXTRACT A construct meaning.

Your paragraph should integrate relevant linguistic terminology.

Read EXTRACT B and answer the question that follows

I see in Extract A, the writer uses language and style to create a story full of natural
images and deeper meaning. At first, the writer presents a common idea of the lion as a
wise and patient hunter through words like “old and wise” and the earth saying, “Wait,
and the moment will come” Nandi Mokoena, “Tracks in the Dust”. This makes the lion
look powerful, but this idea is later compared to the boy’s own search. The word
“Nearby” is used to join the two stories together

, The lion’s hunt and the boy’s search showing that they are connected

(Leland et al., 2013: 150; ENG2612 SG, Unit 1).

The word “hunting” is used in a special way to give a deeper meaning. While the lion
hunts for food, the boy “was hunting for courage.” This turns a physical hunt into an
inner journey, showing that finding courage needs as much patience and strength as
hunting does (ENG2612 SG, Unit 1). The two hunts are set side by side, encouraging
the reader to look beyond the surface and think about different meanings, turning a
simple scene into a deep look at inner strength (Leland et al., 2013: 151).
