1. Practise his conversational English and improve on his speaking and listening skills;
improve his English pronunciation; improve his opportunities with regards to his
employment; improve his English communication skills and vocabulary for his
workplace.
2. Improve his English grammar, vocabulary and communication skills with regard to
communication with his English-speaking friends. (using L1)
Course Rationale: (700 – 1000 words)
Syllabus: This course plan includes a combination of syllabus types, namely the Skills-based
Syllabus and the Topic-based Syllabus. The Skills-based Syllabus approach is essential to
develop the requested and required skills that the student needs in order to achieve his
goals in learning English, as ascertained by reading his written questionnaire feedback, as
well as listening to the conducted interview.
The course plan will include and cover key areas of English learning, including grammar,
reading, listening, writing and speaking.
The course plan will include lessons that involve listening to audio of selected articles,
listening for gist, and vocabulary lists that focus on useful vocabulary the student is likely
to be using daily in his workplace.
The Topic-based Syllabus component will reference the questionnaire submitted by the
student, as well as the interview, in which the student names topics of use and interest. By
focussing on the topics the student has mentioned as his interests and learning focus-areas,
this will ensure the student remains motivated throughout the course and will have a sense
of accomplishment. This increases the likelihood of the student having positive feelings
about learning English and will help him to be more inspired in homework tasks.
Topics: The topics that are focussed on in this course plan are based on and reference the
responses the student gave in both his questionnaire and his interview in preparation for
the English course. The vocabulary will focus on practical and useful terms, phrases and
words that he is likely to make use of in his workplace. This will support his growth and
