1.1 Ego strength

Ego strength refers to the ability of a person’s ego (the rational part of the mind) to cope
effectively with the conflicting demands placed on it by internal impulses, moral
standards, and external reality without becoming overwhelmed or resorting to unhealthy
defence mechanisms. It enables an individual to maintain emotional balance, make
realistic decisions, and adapt to stressful situations in a mature way. In the policing
context, high ego strength helps officers handle the pressures of high-risk situations,
criticism, and ethical dilemmas without losing professional composure (Corey, 2017:
45).



1.2 Field dependence

Field dependence is a cognitive style in which a person relies heavily on the
surrounding context or “field” when processing information and making judgements,
rather than on internal cues. Field-dependent individuals tend to be more influenced by
external social and environmental factors and find it harder to separate an object from
its background. In contrast, field-independent people are more analytical and can focus
on details regardless of the surrounding context (Witkin et al., 1977: 12). In a team-
