QUESTION 1: TEACHING READING AND VIEWING

1.1 Explain the difference between skimming and scanning as reading strategies.

Skimming and scanning are two reading strategies that help us find information in
different ways. Skimming means reading quickly to understand the main idea of a text.
When we skim, we do not read every single word. Instead, we look at titles, headings,
pictures, and key words to get a general idea of what the text is about. Skimming is like
looking at a map from far away to see the whole area. It helps us decide if we want to
read the text in more detail.

(Study Guide, Unit 4, Section 4.5.3.1, page 88)

Scanning is different from skimming. Scanning means reading quickly to find specific
information. When we scan, we know exactly what we are looking for, such as a name,
a date, a number, or a fact. We move our eyes quickly over the text and only stop when
we find what we need. Scanning is like looking for your house key in a messy drawer
you know what it looks like, so you search until you find it. Scanning helps us find facts
and details without reading the whole text.

(Study Guide, Unit 4, Section 4.5.3.2, page 89)

Skimming gives us the big picture, and scanning helps us find specific pieces of
information.
